What Annex VIII Actually Is
Annex VIII of the Machinery Directive describes the assessment of conformity with internal checks on the manufacture of machinery. In practice it means the manufacturer is responsible for compiling a technical file that demonstrates the machine meets the essential health and safety requirements, and for keeping that file available.
The certificate states plainly what happened here: the technical file of the company named on it was inspected, and the audit was completed. That is a step beyond writing a declaration and filing it in a drawer.
What a technical file contains
For machinery, the file is the engineering evidence behind the claim. It typically holds the general arrangement and circuit diagrams, the risk assessment and the hazards identified, the list of standards applied, the design calculations and test results, and the instructions supplied with the machine.
It is the difference between a manufacturer who can show the reasoning and one who can only show a sticker.
The Standards Applied
Three are named on this attestation, and they stack:
- EN ISO 12100:2010 sits at the top. It is the methodology: identify the hazards, estimate and evaluate the risk, then reduce it in a set order. Eliminate the hazard by design where you can, guard against it where you cannot, and give clear warnings and instructions for what is left.
- EN 60204-1:2018+A1:2025 covers the electrical side of the machine: how supply is disconnected and isolated, protection against electric shock, conductor selection and identification, and stop and emergency stop functions.
- EN 809:1998+A1:2009/AC:2010 is the pump specific one, setting safety requirements for pumps and pump units.
Read together they describe a machine that has been thought about as a whole: the mechanical hazards, the electrical system, and the pump specific risks that a general standard would miss.
Why It Matters on a Plant Floor
A vacuum pump is rarely the star of a production line. It sits in a plant room, runs continuously, and gets noticed only when it stops. That is precisely why the design work behind it is worth checking.
Three questions the paperwork helps answer:
- Can it be isolated safely for maintenance? EN 60204-1 covers supply disconnection, which is what your lock out procedure depends on.
- Were the hazards worked through systematically? EN ISO 12100 is the method, and a completed risk assessment is part of the file.
- Are the instructions adequate? Information for use is part of the requirement, not an optional extra.

The attestation lists the oil free range: VD8 to VD400, TD10 to TD40K, KTD60 to KTD400, PVT16 to PVT250, ZSV180 to ZSV650, RTOW500 to RTOW2000, DVS40 to DVS80, and PLWX300 to PLWX1000.
Where This Fits in South Africa
The Machinery Directive is European law and does not apply in South Africa. Your obligations here come from the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, and your risk assessor or safety officer is the right person to confirm what your installation requires.
What the attestation gives you is transferable engineering evidence. The hazard analysis, the electrical safety work and the pump specific requirements were assessed against published standards by a party with no stake in the sale. That is useful in a plant safety file wherever the plant happens to be.
